PRANA VASHYA YOGA

Till date I'm yet to find a tool that is as effective for my mental health as Prana Vashya is. The effects of this practice are so profound I sometimes find it hard to explain. And although I understand this isn't a style of yoga that suits every person I genuinely just want everyone to try it.

Prana Vashya was developed by Vinay Kumar, an outstanding human and Indian teacher from Mysore, with whom I've been training every year since 2015.

The primary series of the Prana Vashya System is a 90-minute fixed sequence that includes the practice of sun salutations plus 60 asanas which are always practiced in the same order and respecting a continuous, steady and synchronized rhythm of breath which we call flow. 

Little stressors in life tend to become big when our minds are weak

In life we go through physical, mental and emotional challenges on a daily basis - at work, at home, in society, in our relationships with our family, friends, and partners, and even in the relationship we have with ourselves. I think everyone can resonate with this. These daily stressors require us to be patient, dedicated, present, to work hard, and accept that things are constantly changing. We don't always have this capacity though. The days we wake up feeling good normally go without much trouble. The days we wake up in a mood will feel more challenging. We are at the mercy of our emotions.

How good would it be if we had the capacity to go through our day and face these normal challenges with a calm mind? How good would it be if instead of having an emotional reaction to every thing that stresses us we had the ability to take a step back and take effective actions without disturbing our emotional wellbeing?

 

I'm not proposing we all turn into robots. I'm suggesting we don't waste our precious, beautiful life getting constantly worked up over things that not only are normal but in the grand scheme of things are actually very minor.  

Having a strong and effective mindset allows us more energy to focus on the important things in life - working on our dreams and purpose, more availability for our family and friends, more energy to dedicate ourselves to the issues we care most about.

 

Truth be said, mental health is extremely important if we want to feel good and do good.

 

How does this relate to Prana Vashya?

 

Think of Prana Vashya as a vaccine. During the practice of Prana Vashya we introduce stress in our body and mind to eventually become immune to it.

 

The stress is introduced at various levels:

  • we affect the rhythm of our heartbeat through the challenge of the physical practice, 

  • we alternate the space our lungs have to breathe between limited and expansive through the different shapes we put our bodies in,  

  • we affect the nervous system as we hold challenging postures,

  • we affect our breath as our mind patterns become more evident

This practice feels very challenging at the beginning. However with time, dedication and a regular practice every single person learns to control their mind and is able to accept the challenge with ease and confidence. When we finally understand that the mind is incredibly resilient and has the ability to change how our body moves, feels and reacts, everything becomes easier – this is when the real yoga starts, on our mat and in life.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to attend all classes of the 2-week and 4-week Intensives?


YES! The benefits of the practice will be much more profound this way. It is my experience (both personal and with other students) that for real growth and development - both mental and physical - to take place we need to commit to our practice regularly and with dedication - at least in the initial stages. There is a reason why the intensives are structured to be with classes every day. I need you to trust me on this. :)




Can I eat before class?


Nope! No big meals 4 hours before class, no small meals 2 hours before class, and no liquids 30 minutes before class. This should be OK since our classes are normally early in the morning. You got this! When you have food in your stomach the space for your lungs will be restricted, meaning you will not be able to breathe as deeply as intended during practice. Also your energy will be directed towards digestion instead of your practice. A lot of the postures in the sequence constrict the abdomen, if you have food in your stomach your practice will become extremely uncomfortable.




I have an injury/physical condition - can I still attend the classes?


This really depends on the kind of injury or physical condition you have. Please send me an email explaining your condition and together we will try to understand whether at the moment this type of practice makes sense to your body or not. Always get clearance from your doctor before commencing a physical practice.




I've never practiced yoga before, I'm not flexible and lack strength - can I still attend these programs?


Yes you can! :) No one is expecting you to touch your toes or have an advance practice on your first day. All I ask from you - regardless of your level as a yoga practitioner - is that you come with respect for your body, an open mind, and the desire to grow. Whenever we find a posture that your body is not yet ready to perform or that is not suitable to your anatomical structure I will give you a variation from which you will obtain the same or very similar benefits.




Is this a Teacher's Training Course?


No! At the moment only Vinay Kumar (developer of the Prana Vashya system) is able to train and certify other practitioners to teach this system. These courses are purely the way I found to both share something I love as well as empower whoever decides to join me on this journey.




Will I get a certification?


No. But you'll gain something way more valuable. A calm and resilient mind, a strong body and autonomy in an amazing practice. This is a very powerful tool to have.




What if I can't make it through the entire program?


You can. :) I promise. You are way more resilient than you think. I'm telling you this from having led more than 40 4-week Prana Vashya Intensives. I am here to show you how strong you can actually be. You got this!




But 4 weeks is such a big commitment, I'm not sure I can do it. Is there a shorter option?


I hear this question a lot. And I get you, I really do. I'm also fully aware that I lose a lot of students because of the intensity with which I format these courses. But the truth is, I really, really, really, but really, so genuinely want you to profoundly go through a transformation. I want that the time we spend together matters. And who are we kidding? We all know that one week is not enough, even two weeks is not enough, doing something once a week might give some momentary results, but that is it, they won't last. If we want change, the brain needs consistency for a longer period of time to actually integrate the change. A lot of studies have been made that prove one month to be the bare minimum for a new behaviour to become automatic. In these intensives we work towards developing a very valuable skill - body and mind resilience. Put simply, it takes time! The good news is - it's only 4 weeks, it's not your entire life. In the grand scheme of things it's actually not that long. :) You got this! And I'm here to support and inspire you along the journey. You also always have the option to do the 2-week Introduction to the System course and if by the end you realize this isn't for you, that's it, you can stop there.
